Numerous elements play a role in determining the health, thickness, and growth rate of hair, including inherited traits, hormonal fluctuations, the condition of the scalp, nutritional intake, and levels of stress.
A leading dermatologist has revealed a highly effective strategy for addressing female hair loss.
Dr. Ellie Rashid recently discussed with GB News the dietary adjustments women can make to promote both scalp and overall hair health.
“Prioritizing protein-rich foods like eggs, fish, lean meats, and legumes is essential for supporting a healthy scalp environment and the follicles responsible for hair growth,” she advised.
Furthermore, incorporating foods abundant in omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to improved scalp health and encourage enhanced hair growth. Dr Rashid suggests:
- Oily fish
- Flaxseeds
- Walnuts
These choices help maintain hydration and reduce inflammation.
Research published by the National Library of Medicine corroborates these benefits, noting that a study demonstrated how “a six-month supplementation with omega 3&6 and antioxidants effectively combats hair loss, improving hair density and reducing the proportion of miniaturized anagen hair.”
Beyond nutrition, proper hair care techniques, particularly washing habits, significantly impact hair’s appearance.
“Establishing a consistent and appropriate hair-washing routine is vital,” Dr. Rashid explained. “Excessive washing can deplete the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and increased breakage. Conversely, infrequent washing may result in buildup, clogged follicles, and inflammation.”
Dr. Rashid recommends washing hair every other day using a gentle cleansing shampoo or a scalp exfoliator to cultivate a flourishing scalp.
She added: “Scalp exfoliation with mild chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid and glycolic acid can effectively remove dead skin cells and excess sebum, minimizing the risk of follicle blockage.”
Water temperature is also crucial.
“Lukewarm water is preferable,” Dr. Rashid stated, “as hot water weakens the hair shaft, increasing susceptibility to breakage.”
Anecdotal evidence further supports these recommendations. One individual shared her experience with jojoba oil on TikTok, noting a significant improvement in hair shine and silkiness.
“You started adding jojoba oil to your hair oiling routine, and now your hair is always shiny and silky.”
She applies the oil weekly to the lengths of her hair, brushing it through and allowing it to remain for one to 1.5 hours.
