Dominican Republic roof collapse claims former MLB players

A devastating tragedy struck the Dominican Republic early Tuesday morning as a nightclub roof collapsed during a performance, claiming the lives of nearly 100 people, including former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco.

Octavio Dotel, a beloved pitcher with World Series experience and native to Santo Domingo, was among those caught in the disaster at the Jet Set nightclub while singer Rubby Pérez was onstage. Despite initial rescue efforts that transported him to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries en route. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed Dotel’s passing along with that of Tony Blanco.

Blanco, who spent one season with the Washington Nationals in 2005, primarily played throughout the minor leagues and in Japan.

“Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of last night’s tragedy in Santo Domingo,” Manfred stated. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family.”

Dominican National Police spokesman Diego Pesqueira confirmed Dotel’s death, stating, “Dotel was taken to one of the designated hospitals. On the way there, his condition worsened and he died.”

Dan Horwits, president of Beverly Hills Sports Council and Dotel’s agent, shared a heartfelt tribute: “The BHSC Family is saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Octavio Dotel. OD was one of a kind…His energy, positivity and zest for life were infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. It was an honor to represent OD.” Horwits also noted Dotel’s unique MLB record – playing for 13 different organizations – which he held with pride.

Among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz and governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi. She reportedly contacted Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader at 12:49 a.m., describing her entrapment as the roof collapsed.

The confirmed death toll has climbed to 98, with over 160 individuals reported injured. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing.

Dotel enjoyed a 15-year major league career spanning 13 teams after debuting with the New York Mets and concluding his run with the Detroit Tigers in 2013. He was an integral part of the St. Louis Cardinals team that secured victory over the Texas Rangers in the 2011 World Series, amassing a total of 109 saves throughout his career.

The Houston Astros, where Dotel played from 2000-2004, paid tribute to the late pitcher. Dotel is survived by his wife, Massiel, and their two children.

The tragedy underscores the profound connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic, a nation known for producing countless talented players.
