Individuals in Britain with upcoming journeys to Belgium are being cautioned by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) regarding potential widespread disruptions due to planned strike actions.
A significant general strike is scheduled for April 29, 2025. The FCDO has indicated that this event “may cause severe travel disruption across the entire country.” These ongoing strikes are part of a series of industrial actions undertaken by Belgian unions, who have been staging nationwide walkouts on the 13th of each month until further notice.
The current situation sees public transportation systems significantly impacted. The strike action involves both public and private sector employees participating in 24-hour work stoppages, leading to widespread service interruptions.
These actions are a response to proposed budget cuts outlined by Belgium’s new coalition government, impacting areas such as pensions, unemployment benefits, public services, and the labor market. The Christian and Socialist trade unions organized these strikes in an expression of discontent.
The Belgian administration, led by Flemish nationalist Bart de Wever – a government sometimes referred to playfully as “Arizona” due to its party colours mirroring those of the US state – is facing increasing resistance to its policies.
Beyond public transport, air traffic has been brought to a standstill as a result of these strikes. The FCDO recommends that prospective visitors thoroughly research their destinations and secure comprehensive travel insurance prior to travelling during this period of unrest.
Key Advice from the FCDO:
- “Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.”
- “No travel can be guaranteed safe.”
The FCDO emphasizes its commitment to providing information “about risks of travel to help you make informed decisions.”
As stated by the FCDO:
“We advise travellers to monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays.”
