Chris Webb, Member of Parliament for Blackpool and chair of the all-party parliamentary group for tourism and hospitality, has expressed enthusiastic support for the forthcoming Universal theme park being established in Bedford.
Webb anticipates that this ambitious project will generate substantial benefits not only for the local economy but also for UK tourism as a whole. He envisions visitors drawn to the new attraction extending their travel plans to explore other destinations across Britain, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the country.
This landmark development marks a pivotal moment for the UK leisure industry. The Bedford park will represent Universal’s inaugural European venture, adding to its existing portfolio of world-renowned parks in locations such as Hollywood, Florida, Japan, Singapore, and Beijing.
Government approval has paved the way for this expansive project, slated for completion by 2031. Speaking on GB News, Webb highlighted the significance of the investment:
“This demonstrates that the UK is a premier destination for international business investment.”
He emphasized the potential economic impact, stating:
- The project is expected to inject £50 billion into local economies nationwide.
- It will create an estimated 28,000 new jobs.
“This is a boon for UK tourism and enhances our global profile,” Webb continued. “It’s a win-win situation; visitors drawn to Universal may well extend their stay with a weekend trip to Blackpool, for example.”
He underscored the importance of prioritizing investment in the tourism sector.
“Any such injection is welcome and will bolster confidence within the UK’s tourism landscape,” he explained. “Blackpool itself has much to offer, with award-winning theme parks and hotels attracting visitors year round.”
Webb noted the continued strength of Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, despite temporary setbacks following the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Pleasure Beach is thriving. We’re seeing ongoing investment, including plans for the UK’s tallest ride in the coming years.”
Spanning a vast 476 acres, the Bedford theme park will also include a 500-room hotel, alongside various retail, dining, and entertainment complexes.
Universal anticipates that this new attraction will become the UK’s largest visitor destination. Plans incorporate design elements celebrating Bedford’s rich heritage, with carefully curated food, beverage options, and attractions reflecting the area’s “vibrant history.”
The Prime Minister’s confirmation of these plans is considered a significant milestone for UK tourism, positioning Bedford “firmly on the global map” alongside Universal’s established parks worldwide.
