Former White House strategist Steve Bannon delivered a scathing rebuke of European leaders during an appearance on GB News, accusing them of financial irresponsibility and failing to uphold their defense obligations.
Bannon’s remarks were particularly pointed, labeling the current state of affairs within Europe as unsustainable. He highlighted a longstanding issue: the reluctance of several nations to meet previously agreed-upon defense spending targets.
“During my time advising the first Trump administration,” Bannon stated, “I frequently found myself urging European counterparts to fulfill their pledges – specifically, to reach the 2.5% commitment made after the intervention in Ukraine back in 2014.”
His criticism wasn’t generalized; he directly addressed several countries.
- “Germany and Italy, among others,” Bannon asserted, “are significantly underperforming.”
He implied that this lack of investment in defense capabilities undermines the collective security posture of Europe and places an undue burden on other nations.
“It’s a matter of responsibility,” he concluded. “They need to step up and meet their commitments.”
