Andrew’s Title Under Scrutiny

Prince Andrew’s continued association with his Dukedom of York is facing increasing opposition, as residents of the city overwhelmingly advocate for its removal following years of controversy.

The titles of Duke and Duchess of York were bestowed upon Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 as a wedding gift. This places him within a lineage dating back to 1385, when the title was first established—traditionally given to the second son of the reigning monarch.

A recent survey conducted by GB News reveals that a significant majority – 71 percent – of those polled in York believe Prince Andrew should no longer hold this prestigious designation. Only eight percent expressed support for him retaining it, while 21 percent indicated neutrality on the matter.

As one resident stated: “We shouldn’t be celebrating him in York in any shape or form.” Another voiced concerns about his impact on the city’s image, saying, “His reputation taints the city, of course it does.”

While some defended Andrew’s right to the title, others questioned its relevance. One individual argued that the titles should reflect genuine connections to their designated locations, stating: “They’re not relevant to me…If there was a Duke of York, he should be from York and born in York.” He further added, “I think he’s an absolute disgrace. He taints the Royal Family.”

The controversy stems largely from Andrew’s involvement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his subsequent appearance on BBC Newsnight in 2019, where he addressed their relationship. This interview sparked widespread public condemnation and led to his withdrawal from royal duties in May 2020.

Queen Elizabeth II further distanced the prince from the monarchy in 2022 by removing his military titles and patronages. Despite these actions, Prince Andrew currently retains the title of Duke of York.
