Sebastian Gorka, a counter-terrorism advisor to former President Trump, expressed his surprise at Britain’s reaction to tariffs implemented by the U.S. administration. In an interview with GB News, he suggested that the United Kingdom is actually benefiting from these measures when compared to its European counterparts.
Gorka challenged Labour leader Keir Starmer, urging him to adopt a more pragmatic approach and recognize the reality of negotiating with President Trump. “He needs to understand that attempting to gain an advantage will not be successful,” Gorka stated.
Highlighting the perceived benefits for the UK, he explained, “Compared to your European colleagues who remain bound by EU regulations, you’re receiving tariffs significantly lower than theirs.” He used an analogy to illustrate his point: “Imagine a classroom where everyone received a failing grade, and you earned a passing one. It seems unreasonable to complain about the situation.”
Defending the tariffs, Gorka described them as a necessary effort to create a more equitable trade environment.
“The president has a very special place in his heart for the UK for all kinds of reasons,” he asserted. “Ultimately, he desires a ‘special relationship’ founded not solely on free trade, but crucially, on fair trade practices. Certain adjustments are required before that can be fully realized.”
Gorka indicated that these tariffs aren’t permanent measures.
“These tariffs are not set in stone,” he said. “Rather, they serve as a signal to those who have engaged in unfair trade practices with the world’s largest market. This marks the start of a discussion, and I don’t believe our friends in the UK need to be overly concerned if they demonstrate reason and approach negotiations understanding that they cannot outmaneuver President Trump.”
While the U.S. has temporarily suspended certain tariffs on other nations, the United Kingdom continues to face a 10 percent tariff on most of its goods.
