A retired military officer is expressing strong disapproval over a local authority’s choice not to financially support commemorations for Victory in Europe Day.
Major Mike Shearer, formerly a spokesperson for the British Army, described Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) council’s decision as “shocking” and “absurd.”
The announcement from the Liberal Democrat-controlled BCP council revealed a lack of funding to properly observe the significant 80th anniversary of VE Day in Poole. This has generated considerable concern within the community.
“It’s deeply disappointing that such an important historical event is being overlooked due to budgetary constraints,” stated Shearer.
The situation highlights a debate surrounding local council priorities and the importance of honoring national milestones.
