Pope Francis Dies

The Catholic world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, a historic figure who served as the first Latin American Pontiff. He was 88 years old at the time of his death, confirmed this morning by the Vatican.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, acting as Camerlengo of the Holy See, delivered the somber announcement:“At approximately 7:35 AM local time, His Holiness Pope Francis peacefully returned to God’s care. His life was wholly devoted to serving both Christ and the global Catholic Church.”

Pope Francis had been receiving intensive medical treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following a protracted period of illness. He faced severe complications including pneumonia – a serious respiratory infection – alongside advanced kidney failure.

His condition deteriorated over several weeks, culminating in his hospitalization on February 14th. This followed a week-long struggle with bronchitis that had significantly worsened. Longstanding issues related to chronic lung disease contributed substantially to his vulnerability.

The news of Pope Francis’s declining health triggered widespread expressions of prayer and support from Catholics worldwide. The outpouring of good wishes reflected the profound impact he had on the global faith community.

Now, a nine-day period of mourning will be observed within the Church. Following this period of reflection, the College of Cardinals will convene in a confidential election – known as a conclave – within the Sistine Chapel to select his successor.
