Poll of the Day: Are Easter Eggs Unaffordable

POLL OF THE DAY: Has the cost of living crisis made Easter eggs unaffordable? VOTE NOW Economics

This Easter season, consumers are facing a significant shock at the checkout – chocolate Easter eggs have experienced another substantial price increase across major retailers.

Recent data reveals a dramatic shift in pricing over the past twelve months. At Tesco, the popular Twix white chocolate Easter egg has seen its cost climb from £5 to £6, accompanied by a reduction in weight from 316 grams to 258 grams – representing a staggering 47% increase in the price per unit.

Similarly, at Lidl, Terry’s Chocolate Orange mini eggs have breached the £1.00 mark, now retailing for £1.35, compared to 99p last year. This change corresponds with a 10-gram reduction in size – a 56% surge in unit cost.

“Which?” research highlights alarming price fluctuations across several supermarkets:

  • Asda: Unit prices for the same mini eggs have risen by 51%.
  • Sainsbury’s: A 37% increase was recorded.
  • Tesco: The unit price has jumped by 14%.

At the premium end of the market, some Easter egg collections are now commanding prices approaching £100. Social media personality Billy D’Souza, aged 32 and residing in Southampton, recently captured public attention by documenting these exorbitant costs.

“I find myself quite taken aback by how much Easter eggs cost,” he stated, “but frankly, given the current economic climate, it feels like this price escalation is becoming a recurring trend each year.”

D’Souza recounted his experience purchasing a 4kg Easter egg last year for £100. This year, he reports paying £225 – attributing the increase to rising ingredient costs.

These escalating prices coincide with predictions of renewed inflationary pressures following a brief dip in inflation rates to 2.6% over the past twelve months. Factors such as elevated household bills and ongoing trade tariffs are anticipated to further strain British households’ finances in the coming months.
