Florida Shooting Suspect Held

A suspect has been apprehended following a shooting incident at Florida State University, resulting in multiple reported injuries. Authorities are currently providing medical care to those affected by the event.

The shooting occurred around midday (early this morning AEST) near the university’s student union, prompting a swift response from emergency services and law enforcement. Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare confirmed they were receiving and treating individuals impacted by the shooting; however, they could not yet disclose the total number of patients or the extent of their injuries.

As details continue to emerge, a source familiar with the investigation, speaking anonymously, indicated that the severity of the victims’ wounds remains unknown, and further information about the suspect is still being gathered.

The campus, located just west of Florida’s capital city, was immediately inundated with emergency vehicles – ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol cars from various agencies converged on the scene after FSU issued an “active shooter” alert. The university urged students and faculty to seek shelter, advising them to “lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed concern via social media:

> “Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding.”

The atmosphere on campus was one of palpable fear and anxiety. Hundreds of students fled the area near the student union, many visibly shaken. Groups gathered anxiously around the music school awaiting updates.

One student, Ryan Cedergren, 21, a communications major, recounted hiding with approximately 30 others in the student union’s bowling alley after witnessing people running from a nearby bar. He described the experience as “survival mode.” After nearly fifteen minutes, university police escorted them to safety, where he observed someone receiving emergency treatment on the lawn.

Another student, Joshua Sirmans, 20, was inside the university’s main library when alarms began sounding, warning of an active shooter situation. Law enforcement officers safely guided him and other students out of the building with their hands raised.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the Justice Department is in contact with FBI agents who are currently on scene assisting with the investigation.

  • Emergency services continue to provide care for those affected by the shooting.
  • The identity of the suspect and their motive remain unknown at this time.
  • Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to investigate the incident and ensure campus safety.
