Lanzarote has been designated a state of emergency following extensive flooding triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall this weekend, marking the first time such measures have been implemented island-wide under the Special Civil Protection and Emergency Response Plan for Flood Risk.
The most intense period of precipitation occurred between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday, leading to widespread disruption. Emergency services are currently responding to numerous incidents across the island as the situation evolves.
Key Areas Impacted:
- Arrecife
- Teguise
- San Bartolomé
The 112 emergency services reported approximately 150 weather-related incidents between 2pm and 4pm alone, primarily involving flooded homes, garages, and impassable roads.
“The scale of these events has required a significant response,” stated officials. Teguise was particularly hard hit, with over 20 reported incidents affecting ground floors and garage areas before the storm’s peak intensity. Municipal and island-level emergency resources have been mobilized to address the crisis, coordinated through CECOES 112, the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre.
Several vital roadways are currently closed due to flooding, including the route connecting Arrecife and Órzola near Tahíche. Access to Costa Teguise from the north is presently blocked due to impassable conditions. Teams continue working diligently across affected areas.
The General Directorate of Emergencies has issued a warning advising against any activity near ravines, citing the risk of flash flooding. Authorities strongly urge residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary travel by road. Driving through flooded streets is strictly prohibited.
“Your safety is our priority,” stated a representative from CECOES 112. Residents are encouraged to ensure their mobile phone batteries are fully charged in case they need to contact emergency services via 112.
For general inquiries and non-emergency information, the public is advised to utilize the 012 helpline.
This declaration is part of a broader pre-alert issued for the eastern Canary Islands and Tenerife under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena. The Lanzarote Cabildo has confirmed that both Lanzarote and La Graciosa will remain on alert for rain throughout the day, with potential for particularly intense downpours as forecasted by the State Meteorological Agency.
“We urge everyone to remain calm and adhere to all safety recommendations,” concluded officials. Emergency services are closely monitoring the situation.
