Chief cites doors in mansion attack survival

Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline has stated that the fortuitous closure of certain doors played a crucial role in preventing tragedy during the recent fire at Pennsylvania’s Governor’s Mansion.

During a press briefing held on Monday, Enterline described the challenges his department encountered while attempting to locate and access the scene of the blaze.

“We couldn’t simply drive our vehicles up to the building,” he explained. “Accessing the property required us to breach some gates.”

Once inside, firefighters were able to “rapidly contain the fire’s spread,” preventing further damage.

The incident is linked to Cody Balmer, 38, who has been accused of setting the mansion ablaze while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were sleeping inside. Police reports indicate that Balmer confessed to harboring animosity toward Shapiro. Balmer now faces a multitude of charges including domestic terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault, in addition to criminal homicide. He is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital for an unrelated medical issue.

“The scene was quite surreal when I arrived approximately 15 minutes after the fire started,” Enterline remarked.

He emphasized the importance of preserving any evidence left behind by the alleged arsonist for investigators.

Enterline highlighted that the mansion, constructed in 1968, lacks a modern fire suppression system. He expressed hope that such a system will be incorporated during upcoming renovations.

“Fortunately, closed doors separated the main ballroom from the hallway leading to the second-floor staircase,” Enterline stated. “Without those doors, the outcome could have been drastically different – likely far more severe.”

When questioned about a potential motive for the attack, former President Donald Trump commented during a meeting with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele.

“No, I haven’t heard anything,” he said. “But apparently, the attacker wasn’t a fan of anyone, from what I understand. Just a disturbed individual. And something like that simply cannot be tolerated.”

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Balmer’s arrest and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
