Seeking a path independent of the Democratic Party, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his candidacy for re-election as an independent candidate.
During a recent interview on “My View with Lara Trump,” Adams stated that the Democratic Party had effectively abandoned him, emphasizing his dedication to addressing the concerns and anxieties of ordinary New Yorkers. “People say, well, you know you left the Democratic Party — you know, the party left me,” he remarked.
Adams highlighted a focus on “common sense” solutions, particularly regarding immigration—an issue that has significantly impacted New York City.
The city, designated as a sanctuary city, has experienced considerable strain due to the influx of migrants under the Biden administration. While Adams has previously criticized past federal policies and faced criticism for his own responses to the crisis, he maintains that the burden should not fall solely on local taxpayers.
Here’s a breakdown of the situation:
- As of February, the number of migrants receiving city care decreased from a peak of 69,000 in January 2024 to “fewer than 45,000.”
- New York City has spent an estimated billions of dollars providing housing for over 232,000 individuals who arrived since spring 2022.
“That should not have been our problem, and it was, and it was extremely difficult to deal with it, but we did, and it’s going to have a long-term impact on our city,” Adams cautioned.
Recently, Mayor Adams signed an executive order permitting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) access to Rikers Island. This decision, supported by the Trump administration, is currently being challenged by the Democrat-controlled New York City Council.
Defending his actions, Adams stated, “I also respect the law… I’m not apologizing for that, and I’m not going to ever relinquish my authority to keep New Yorkers safe.” He further criticized what he described as a misrepresentation of ICE by the far-Left wing of the Democratic party.
Adams expressed his willingness to collaborate with Republican leadership, stating his respect for the office of the presidency and his commitment to delivering results for New York City residents. “What we must do is what is happening, I believe, under this [Trump] administration , we’re securing our borders so cities don’t have to deal with a federal problem that we’re seeing in many of our major cities,” he explained.
“I respect the office. There’s a president called President Trump. I’m going to work with that president to produce for the people of our city because I respect the office.”
